Armonk is a hamlet located within the town of North Castle in Westchester County, NY. Armonk’s name is derived from “armonck,” the word used by the region’s Siwanoy Indians to refer to the nearby Byram River. The land including Armonk and all of North Castle was considered a neutral territory during the American Revolution, although it was largely patriotic and the hills of North Castle were used as a vantage point for General Washington’s men in the Battle of White Plains. Armonk’s oldest building, Smith’s Tavern, dates back to this period. The 1800’s and the construction of the Putnam Railroad brought much life and development into Armonk; in the latter half of the century, Armonk’s center was divided into building lots and many beautiful homes were built. Armonk’s “Bedford Road Historic District” still features many of those homes and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
When commerce and industry began to pick up in the early years of the 20th century, Armonk and all of North Castle became a popular residential spot for gentlemen from New York City, who wanted to build their country estates within quick commuting distance to the Big Apple. The Armonk of today is still known as thus; located only 35 minutes north of Manhattan by the Metro North Train, Armonk offers a peaceful getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. It’s truly unique in its “small town” atmosphere. Armonk has no national chain stores, and aside from two gas stations, a grocery store, and three banks, all of Armonk’s businesses within its quaint village center are locally owned and operated.
Armonk offers a number of sophisticated amenities, such as an award-winning school system that prepares its students for higher education and beyond. Ninety-eight percent of Amonk’s students go on to college, many of them Ivy League schools. Within the Byram Hills Central School District are Coman Hill Elementary School (K-2), Wampus Elementary School (3-5), H.C. Crittenden Middle School (6-8), and Byram Hills High School (9-12). Armonk also offers two private schools for the little ones—the Montessori Children’s Room for kindergartners, and the Little Sparrows of Hillside for preschool and kindergarten.
A true retreat from city life, Armonk, NY is a wonderful place to call home. Whether you are looking for a house in which to raise a family, or ... Read more
