The Greater Binghamton, New York area is comprised of several small towns surrounding the city of Binghamton. While Binghamton has a population of approximately 45,000 people, the entire area’s population averages about 200,000 when surrounding towns such as Endicott, Johnson City, Vestal, Windsor, and several others are included. The area became known as the “Triple Cities” during the early 1900’s, and included Binghamton, Endicott, and Johnson City.
During the 1920’s the area was known for its many factories, including cigar factories, and Endicott-Johnson footwear. Additionally, Endicott is well-known as the town where International Business Machines (I.B.M.) was founded in 1889.
The Binghamton area has many beautiful parks, and is also known as the “Carousel Capital.” The area has several carousels, installed in the 1920’s and 1930’s, and are all free to ride on, thanks to George F. Johnson, founder of Endicott-Johnson, who wanted all children to be able to experience riding on carousels, whether rich or poor.
Currently the Binghamton area is home to Binghamton University, Broome Community College and Davis College. In addition to these fine schools, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, United Health Services, BAE Systems, and Lockheed Martin employ thousands of members of the community.
The area also hosts Roberson Museum, Kopernik Space Education Center and Observatory, The Ross Park Zoo (one of the oldest zoos in the United States), The Discovery Center of the Southern Tier (a hands-on museum for children), and several performing arts venues including The Cider Mill Playhouse, The Anderson Center for the Performing Arts, The Broadway Theatre League, The Forum, The Tri-Cities Opera and The Broome County Veteran’s Memorial Arena.
