The village of Brewster is located within the town of Southeast, NY, approximately fifty miles north of New York City. In the early 18th century, the region was settled by families from Cape Cod and Long Island, and after the border disputes between New York and Connecticut were resolved, New York incorporated the town of Southeast in 1788. The village of Brewster, however, wasn’t founded until 1849. William Brewster, a local builder and speculator, was solely responsible for designing and building Brewster’s main street, and over 50 buildings, churches, and stores. He also constructed passenger and freight train depots so that Brewster would be a stop along the Harlem Line Railroad. The village of Brewster was incorporated by New York in 1894.
Brewster is considered to be a historic community, and has several buildings and homes on the National Register of Historic Places. In fact, the founder William Brewster’s residence still stands as a landmark of the village’s beginnings. The Brewster House, perched above Main Street, was built in 1850 by Brewster himself. It is a great example of Greek Revival architecture, and is now open for public tours.
Although the community of Brewster takes pride in the village’s past, it has big plans for the village’s future. Brewster residents have announced that the village is currently “in the midst of a dramatic renaissance,” which includes new water and sewer lines, newly renovated classic homes and buildings, and pedestrian-friendly streets--all the while preserving the natural beauty of the region. Brewster aspires to be the business and cultural center of Harlem Valley.
