The village of Bronxville is located within the town of Eastchester, 15 miles north of midtown Manhattan, along the banks of the Bronx River. Bronxville’s history begins in the mid-1600s, when local Mohican Indians deeded the land over to European newcomers. The area and its river were named after Jonas Bronck, a Swedish settler who purchased large amounts of land north of Harlem in 1639. After Bronck’s untimely death in 1643, the land that was to become Bronxville did not see much development until later in the 18th century. Bronxville’s first notable families who helped to shape the future of the village are the Underhills and the Morgans. Although both families farmed and grew orchards, the Underhills established the first local factory—a saw and grist mill—which brought attention to the area as a manufacturing center. A community began to develop in the area and once the New York and Harlem Railroad was built in the mid-19th century, Bronxville began to see more residents as New York City’s population began to spread north. The village was incorporated in 1898 with 300 residents calling it their home.

Today the village of Bronxville has a thriving population of over 6,200 residents, and it is well-known and loved for its quaint, English-style “village-ness.” Bronxville boasts a peaceful atmosphere filled with verdant grassy lawns, tree-lined streets, beautiful homes, and a small-town spirit that is in stark contrast to life in nearby New York City. With an award-winning school system, Bronxville is an excellent place to raise a family. The teachers of the Bronxville Public School System offer children a well-rounded education, utilizing a combination of the best traditional and innovative teaching methods. And aside from the three public schools, Bronxville also offers six private schools, and two schools of higher education, including the nationally renowned Sarah Lawrence College.
