About Oswego, NY

Welcome to Oswego, situated 40 miles north of Syracuse, one of the Ports of Lake Ontario. From the days first settlers encountered Native Americans in the late 15th Century, through the building of the Oswego Canal in 1827, until today, Oswego’s history is rich in tradition. Fort Ontario played an important role in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. From early days when fur trading drove economies, to later days when water transportation dictated growth, the area has seen many evolutions.

Oswego was a part of the Underground Railroad assisting emancipated slaves in their journey to freedom. A numerous mix of people settling in the area brought various levels of wealth, using their resources to establish buildings now having deep historic value and appeal, including Greek revival, Federal and one-of-a-kind buildings.

Today the Oswego area is home to various industrial plants and electrical generation facilities, including nuclear, fossil fuel, gas and hydro-powered plants. The community is fortunate to have the State University College at Oswego, as well as Oswego Health, with its many care facilities.

Oswego boasts a very low crime rate, low home prices, and offers an excellent school system. The mission of our educational programs is based on our districts’ “Standard of Excellence” as well as New York State mandates.

It has been said that Oswego is a “diamond in the rough.” Housing prices are low and quality of life high! Its housing market has experienced minimal but steady appreciation over the years. This being said, the area’s prices have not tumbled, as seen in many fast-growth areas of the country. Housing prices remain stable—one can live comfortably and affordably, with available homes as low as $40,000; higher end homes from $150,000 and up.

Recreational activities include sports fishing, as well as boating and swimming in the Summer. Wintertime offers cross country skiing, ice skating, hockey and more. Cultural opportunities include theater, art, music, dance, museums and more.

Residents and tourists alike admire the spectacular Lake Ontario sunsets and Oswego River views! If you’re looking for “quality of life” Oswego has it all!
