Welcome to Highland Falls, NY

The village of Highland Falls is located on the Hudson River in Orange County, New York, approximately 55 miles north of New York City. With a history of non-Native settlement that dates back as far as 1723, the Highland Falls region has long been a strategic military location for the U.S. During the American Revolution, Fortress West Point was established in order to help secure the Hudson and defend the colonies. Iron ore was mined locally in order to manufacture giant chain links that were strung across the Hudson to stop ships from traveling up the river. At the culmination of the war, Fortress West Point became the West Point Military Academy, the nation’s first engineering school, formed in 1802. Throughout the 19th century, Highland Falls, Fort Montgomery, and West Point were considered part of the Town of Cornwall, but became separate entities starting in 1873. Highland Falls incorporated as a village in 1906, and since then has been dubbed “Historic Gateway to West Point,” as well as “Hometown USA” after its Hotel Thayer welcomed the 52 Americans that were held hostage in Iran in 1982.

Today Highland Falls boasts a population of nearly 4,000 residents, and its scenic views and charming small-town atmosphere have attracted many newcomers and visitors who desire a peaceful escape from the bustle of New York City. Highland Falls offers unique shopping and dining along its quaint Main Street, as well as a fascinating and educational historic walking tour that showcases the village’s finest historical architecture. West Point brings many cultural attractions to the community, such as the West Point Museum, the Eisenhower Hall Theater, and various sports games hosted by Army Athletics. Constitution Island, located on the Hudson across from West Point, features two key historical attractions listed on the National Register of Historic Places—the Warner House (Susan Warner wrote the hymn “Jesus Loves Me”) and the ruins of the Revolutionary War fortifications.
