Located in Rockland County, NY at the foothills of Hook Mountain, New City is the most heavily populated Hamlet in Rockland County and is the county seat for government offices and for the Town of Clarkstown.
Originally an agricultural community, the area had a scattered population in colonial days. Its explosive growth to approximately 35,000 came in the latter part of the 20th century, following the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge and the interstate highway system. New City is the County seat of the Rockland County Historical Society.
It is a suburban community of NYC, with mostly single family homes, condos, town homes and senior housing. Home styles in New City range from turn-of-the-century village homes, to mid-century cape cods, split levels, high ranches and side hall colonials, up to contemporary mansions or large new colonials.
With many office buildings, national non-profits, and professional services, New City is the county’s business center. Most who do not work locally commute to northern New Jersey, Westchester and New York City, only 16 miles away.
“Main Street” in New City is also the home to banks, investment firms, county and town governments and the lawyers, accountants and others who work with them. On weekends and during the summer, residents are more likely to be found shopping the many local stores along Main Street, dining in local restaurants and enjoying nearby parks, town pool, or shopping at nearby malls. Evenings many travel east to nearby Nyack for entertainment and dining.
New City and the Town of Clarkstown have many parks and pools and is only a 10 minute drive from Bear Mountain/Harriman State Park. The Town recreation department offers many activities for both children and seniors. There is horseback riding, hiking and winter sports. Boating marinas in Haverstraw and Nyack/Piermont are close by.
There is a very strong intramural sports program in the New City. In cooperation with the Clarkstown Family Resource Partnership, there are after-school homework clubs and early morning childcare programs at all the elementary schools. The Rivertown Youth Theater in Nyack, NY offers classes for children of 5-18 years in all aspects of theater performance and production.
