Located in Rockland County, NY, close to the NJ border Pearl River is a suburb of NYC situated in the Town of Orangetown, and is host to the 3rd largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the country. It is a community of working-class people and commuters to NYC with the train station located in the center of town.
Established in 1872 by Julius Braunsdorf, Pearl River has become very popular. It’s first population boom was after World War II as thousands moved to the town. The opening of the Tappan Zee Bridge (1955) and the Palisades Interstate Parkway (1958) provided more mobility, making Pearl River an even more desirable place to live and raise a family.
Housing options in Pearl River include single-family homes, either older Victorians or more modern capes, colonials, ranches, split-levels and bi-levels. A small number of condos and townhomes and senior housing is available, with more under construction.
This is a community where people know and support each other. Residents include young people, families, and elders. Businesses in Pearl River are active all week long, but the hamlet really comes alive on weekends, when residents do errands, socialize at downtown Irish pubs, swim clubs, and the town golf course. The Rockland Irish American Cultural Center is in nearby Blauvelt and is another important gathering place.
Farming and tourism also thrived, thanks to the establishment of the railroad, which conveyed cut flowers, berries, and vegetables down to New York City and summer refugees from the city headed up to Pearl River. Since the opening of the Tappan Zee Bridge and the Palisades Parkway in the 1950s, the hamlet has developed into a suburban community, where small businesses flourish and commuters have easy access to New York City and surrounding areas.
The Town of Orangetown is the governing body of this hamlet and offers may extracurricular and sports activities for families and children within its many parks and sports fields.
