The History of Scarsdale, NYThe history of Scarsdale, located just north of New York City, in Westchester County, New York, begins in the 17th century with the once jaded Caleb Heathcote of Chesterfield in the Hundred of Scarsdale, Derbyshire, England. Heathcote was to be married, but when his soon-to-be wife chose one of his older brothers instead, he decided to leave the country, and set sail for New York. Soon after Heathcote was settled, he began to prosper in the area, and decided to acquire a good bit of land with which he established a manor. Named “Scarsdale” in memory of Heathcote’s home, the manor became one of the nine royal manors of New York, and was home to only 12 people as of 1712. After Heathcote’s death, the manor was divided and sold to its tenants. Scarsdale became an official town in 1788. In the years that followed, Scarsdale existed primarily as a small farming community, and it wasn’t until the New York and Harlem Railroad extended its tracks to the area in 1847 that the town experienced a major influx in population. This influx was mostly comprised of nearby New Yorkers who commuted to and from the city, but enjoyed living in a more rural atmosphere. In 1891, the Arthur Suburban Home Company purchased 150 acres of farmland and turned it into a residential site, comprised of a row of single family homes. The site’s popularity paved the way for more residential development, and marked the beginnings of a Scarsdale community with the establishment of a neighborhood association, a town club, a women’s club, and more accommodating schools.
