Welcome to Sleepy Hollow, NY

Sleepy Hollow is a historic town located on the eastern shore of the Hudson River, 26 miles north of mid-town Manhattan. Once part of Tarrytown and called North Tarrytown, the village now has its own fire and police departments and is called Sleepy Hollow. Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, however, continue to share the same school system. Known for the residential neighborhoods of Sleepy Hollow Manor and Philipse Manor, Sleepy Hollow has attracted professionals who are close enough to the city, only a 40 minute ride on Metro North Railway, and yet far enough to enjoy small town living. There are many recreational activities such as outdoor concerts, summer camps, fishing and hiking. Kingsland Park, the Philipse Manor beach and marina, tennis courts, a boardwalk along the river and much more offer ample opportunity to keep busy.

Sleepy Hollow is also steeped in history with many points of interest to visit. The first settlers of Sleepy Hollow were Dutch, known for their agricultural expertise. The 16th century working farm and mill, Philipsburg Manor, is still an attraction for tourists today along with the Old Dutch Church which was built around the same time. Around the turn of the century, Sleepy Hollow became a destination for wealthy individuals because of its close proximity to Manhattan, while still retaining its small town charm. Pocantico Hills, a hamlet of Sleepy Hollow, became the location of John D. Rockefeller’s estate, called Kykuit. It is currently open for tours highlighting the magnificent gardens and the rare automobile collection. The Sleepy Hollow cemetery boasts such famous people as Brooke Astor, Elizabeth Arden and Andrew Carnegie.

With a population of about 9,000, Sleepy Hollow remains one of the few villages that inspired the famous writer, Washington Irving, to write a tale called “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”
