The town of Stony Brook is situated on the North Shore of Long Island, New York. Centrally located on Long Island Stony Brook is approximately 60 miles east of Manhattan and 60 miles west of the Hamptons. Stony Brook is known for its historic heritage and different attractions. In the heart of the town lies a quaint village known for its shopping, beaches and a marina. Conveniently located down the street from the village are the museums, which feature constantly changing exhibits along with their permanent ones. Stony Brook is part of the Three Villages comprised of Stony Brook, Setauket and Old Field. Stony Brook’s character is most attributed to the philanthropist Ward Melville, a business man who at one point owned most of the area. Melville later donated money and land which then became Stony Brook University. The Three Village School District is one of the top ranked school districts on Long Island.
