About North Canton, Ohio
North Canton began as the village of New Berlin in 1831. New Berlin was the first village to be plotted in Plain Township, one of the original townships created when Stark County was formed in 1809. The residents, mostly of German descent decided during World War l to change the name and in 1918 it became North Canton.
In 1873 William H. “Boss” Hoover moved his tanning business to the center of town where he ran the successful business until 1919 when the decision was made to focus all manufacturing efforts on vacuum cleaners. In 1933 the Hoover Company became the world leader in vacuum cleaners.
The city of North Canton has been the benefactor of many gifts and donations from the Hoover family and the Hoover Company which have shaped the community in various ways. In recognition of the contributions made by the Hoover’s it was only fitting that the high school built in 1957 (since rebuilt in a new location) be named North Canton Hoover High School.
North Canton today is a thriving and desirable community located just north of Canton, 18 miles south of Akron and about 50 miles south of Cleveland. It is just minutes from the Canton/Akron Airport, one of the nations’ fastest growing regional airports.
Combine the community atmosphere of North Canton with the reputation of the North Canton School district, ranked as one of the top districts in Ohio and you have have a desirable community in which to live.
