The city of Northport, Alabama is located on the north shore of the Warrior River across from the city of Tuscaloosa. Historically the settlement at Northport, or first believed to have been known as Kentuck or Canetuck, was the site of a ford or easy crossing of the Warrior River. The settlement at Northport thrived in its early days due to the commerce associated with shipping along the river. It’s port serviced river traffic sending goods from west central Alabama to the port at Mobile.
Today, Northport, Alabama continues to grow. The old days of steamboats navigating up and down the river are gone, only to be reminisced by the occasional voyage of the Bama Belle, a local tourist excursion.
The city of Northport is best known for the quaint village like layout of its downtown area which offers unique shopping and dining experiences. Northport is home to its annual Kentuck festival which features the artistry of area and regional craftsmen from across the south, as well as, Dickens Downtown, an annual Victorian Christmas Holiday Celebration. The proximity of Northport to Tuscaloosa, Alabama allows residents to share in the revitalized growth of the University of Alabama.
