About Buckeye Lake, Ohio

Known in the mid- 1700's as the “Big Swamp”, Buckeye Lake, Ohio was formed in the Glacial Period. It was the first large reservoir built in the country and became Ohio's first state park in 1894. Today, this lake is a popular vacation spot drawing young families, professionals and retirees. There are currently 6,000 cottages and residences in the area. Many of Buckeye Lake's single-story houses date back 100 years, while much of today's current construction makes a grandiose architectural statement. The new Greater Buckeye Lake Historical Museum traces area history and exhibits local artifacts.
