Welcome to Cheviot, OH

One of Cincinnati’s first suburbs, Cheviot, Ohio began as a four-block town with six streets. It was platted in 1818 by a Scottish immigrant John Craig, who named the place after the ridge of hills that separated England from Scotland. In 1901, it was incorporated and became a city in 1932. Today, Cheviot is a traditional west-side community, with its baseball diamonds and soccer fields. Church activities are important part of the Cheviot life. Housing options here include Cape Cods, ranches and colonials. To get rid of blight and improve the neighborhood, Cheviot began acquiring $1 homes from HUD—rehabbing and selling them to those who want to own homes. (Dollar Homes program is a brainchild of the Department of Housing & Urban Development.) The neighborhood draws young families because of its proximity to shopping and recreational facilities and schools. Its newly renovated Cheviot School, Pre-K–8, opened in 2006, the year it celebrated its 80th anniversary. In 2007, Money magazine listed Cheviot as one of three most affordable housing in the area. Cheviot is still heavily influenced by its German heritage, and annual events include its own Oktoberfest and the popular Harvest Home Festival that began in 1860 and attracts some 30,000 people. Westside Streetfest happens in June featuring live music, games, carnival rides and food. Ohio’s first Vietnam Veterans of America chapter started in Cheviot in 1980. And, scenes from the movie Little Man Tate were filmed on location at Harrison Grill.
