About Massillon, Ohio

In the early 1800’s, Quaker ministers Thomas and Charity Rotch arrived from Massachusetts bringing with them dreams and an entrepreneurial spirit that served as the foundation for the vibrant industrial community that was about to follow. With the advent of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1827, Massillon became a thriving center of commerce. By the first decades of the1900s, Massillon was on the cutting edge of industrial technology.

The industrial boom was followed by a bust. When the steel industry was dethroned in the 1960s, Massillon suffered along with the other communities of the “Rust Belt”. The dismal days of the 70s and 80s have given way to the renaissance of the 90s. Massillon has retooled and welcomed new industries within its boundaries. Today the city leaders are once again proactively moving Massillon forward. The residential housing market reflects Massillon’s resurgence. After years of anemic housing growth, Massillon is once again attracting builders and developers to replace its aging housing stock.

The city has an abundance of parks and recreation venues for its residents and continuing the legacy of Paul Brown has constructed one of the premier high school athletic facilities in the world. Known nationwide as a high school football powerhouse, the Massillon Tiger football program is the glue that binds this proud city.
