The quaint town of Oxford, Ohio is situated on the northwestern corner of Butler County began in the early 1800s and was incorporated in 1830. It is home to Miami University, established in 1809 and is seventh-oldest state-assisted university in the nation. Miami has three campuses—Oxford & branches, Middletown and Hamilton. More than 22,000 reside in Oxford, with 44 percent between 20-24, because of the influence of the university. Oxford is a full-service municipality— pumping its own water and treating its own sewage. It has its own airport—with a 4,000-foot paved and lighted runway. Mc-Cullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital, a fully accredited nonprofit facility, is here. Its emergency room is open round the clock, seven days a week. It is served by five hotels, including Hueston Woods State Park (94 rooms and 59 cabins) and Hampton Inn (66 rooms). For recreation, Oxford offers 11 parks, tennis courts, basketball courts, a heated outdoor municipal swimming pool, and outdoor playing fields. In addition, some of Miami University’s facilities are open to the public, such as an outdoor ice skating rink, indoor pools, hiking trails, and a riding stable. Plus cultural events at the university, including performing arts series, art museum exhibits, McGuffey Museum, and sports activities such as hockey, basketball and football. Oxford has some archeological sites, which have been classified by the State of Ohio, as mounds or prehistoric campsites.
