Living in Silverton, OH

Silverton, Ohio’s business district will soon get some $700,000 worth of updating—with new sidewalks, new traffic-signal mast arms, decorative street lights and some planter boxes along Plainfield Road. It is hoped that the improvements will draw people to the business district—walk around and shop. Business district has family-owned stores, professional buildings and restaurants. Meier’s Wine Cellar, Ohio’s oldest winery, is located here; also the Marva Collins Preparatory School campus for grades 4–8 and Silverton Paideia Elementary School. Residential area features a variety of home styles— ranch designs, brick and smaller frames with beautiful shade trees and well-kept grounds. Community leaders are hoping to get a Tree City USA designation, which it applied for in 2007. Its Playfield has a pool, baseball diamonds shuffleboard and basketball courts and picnic areas. The community was formed out of Columbia and Sycamore townships and dates back to days shortly after the Revolutionary War. Seth Haines and Robert Cresap are believed to have developed the first subdivision here. Originally called Mosner or Enterprise, it was renamed Silverton, after Haines’s wife, Elizabeth Silver Haines. It attained city status in 1961. Notable residents include Hall of Famer quarterback Roger Staubach and former Reds shortstop Barry Larkin.
