Norman, OK: Home of Legends

While Norman is known for being the home of the University of Oklahoma and its legendary football program, it is also the home of some famous people. Barry Switzer, Bob Stoops, David Boren and Toby Keith live in the city and can be seen about town, from time to time. James Garner, as Bret Maverick in statue form, can be seen on Main Street, where it was unveiled in April, 2006. Mr. Garner doesn’t live in Norman any longer but comes to visit family, on occasion. Many other legends, too numerous to mention here, have made Norman there home, either by birth or the University.

Norman is known as an education community because the University of Oklahoma and the Norman Public School System are two of the city’s largest employers. The Public School System includes two high schools, four middle schools and fifteen elementary schools. There are seven private schools in the city, as well as the Moore Norman Technology Center, which provides a wide variety of career and technical training. Norman is also home for the U. S. Postal Service National Center for Employee Development and National Weather Center houses the Storm Prediction Center and the National Severe Storms Laboratory; working in conjunction with the Meteorology programs offered by the University.

Neighborhoods offer a wide variety of homes. You can find campus homes, new construction and rural estates in or within close proximity of the city. If you like horses, the country side is adorned with several ranches. And, the cost of housing is well below the national average.

Cultural attractions include the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, which houses the largest collection of French Impressionist art ever given to an American University. The University Theatre produces a variety of shows, including musicals, year around.

Senior residents find Norman a great place to live. It is safe, living is affordable, there are many activities for retired people and there is convenient, affordable and professional health care available. Norman Regional Hospital is expanding to meet the needs of the community and the University of Oklahoma Medical Center is just 20 miles away in Oklahoma City.

In 2008, Money Magazine ranked Norman as the 6th best place to live in the United States. It’s no wonder that Norman is the home of legends.
