Legend has it that the people of a small town just east of Portland who wanted to incorporate were told they would need a post office and postal code to do so. However, U.S. Postmaster Walter Quinton Gresham would only grant permission for a post office if the town was named in his honor. Thus, in 1884 the city of Gresham, Oregon saw its first post office, though the city wasn't incorporated until 1905. Nowadays, Gresham is home to 95,000 residents.
Lying just minutes east of Portland, Gresham is known as the “City of Music,” largely due to the world famous Mt. Hood Jazz Festival that happens there each summer. Gresham residents also enjoy numerous outdoor recreational activities thanks to nearby Mt. Hood and the Columbia River Gorge.
