Welcome to Salem, Oregon

The state capitol of Oregon, Salem, is more than a hub of political activity. Its history, beauty, and civic pride of its 147,000 residents set it apart. Lying 47 miles from Portland, and an hour in each direction to the Pacific Ocean or Cascade Mountains, Salem enjoys the very best of everything Oregon has to offer.

The area that is now Salem was known as Chemeketa, meaning “resting place,” by the Native Americans who lived there. The city of Salem was founded on the site of the Jason Lee mission during the 1840s. The state capitol was moved here from Oregon City in 1851, though the city itself wasn't incorporated until 1857.

Home to Willamette University, Salem is a city dedicated to education. The 13 higher education institutions within 70 miles of Salem help give it a “college town feel.” A vibrant cultural core—including museums, historic sites, theater, and music—provides lifelong learning for everyone who calls Salem home.

Many homes for sale in Salem, Oregon reflect its stature as a capitol with their early twentieth century architecture. Others take their queues from more contemporary styles. There is real estate here to make every family's dreams come true.
