Welcome to Overland Park, KSThe city of Overland Park is part of Johnson County in northeast Kansas, approximately 15 miles southwest of Kansas City. With a history dating back to 1905, Overland Park was founded by William B. Strang, Jr., who strove to develop a “park-like” community with strong foundations in commerce, education, and quality of life. In the 15 years before his death, Strang managed to establish housing developments, an interurban railroad, and an airfield. He sponsored the first airplane show west of the Mississippi, featuring the Wright brothers, in 1909. A few of the vestiges from Strang’s lifetime remain in downtown Overland Park today, including Strang’s limestone car barn (now the site of Traditions Furniture) and the Carriage House, which is home to the Overland Park Historical Society.
When Overland Park incorporated on May 20, 1960 it claimed a population of 28,085, but since then it has grown tremendously, and currently stands as the second largest city in Kansas with a population of around 170,000. Overland Park was once considered a bedroom community of Kansas City, but with its own thriving business climate, exciting list of attractions, and vibrant community, it is far from being a sleepy Midwest town. Overland Park is home to thousands of companies, including the headquarters of major corporations such as Sprint, YRC Worldwide, Applebee’s Restaurants, Black & Veatch, and Universal Underwriters, and offers an abundance of career opportunities in a variety of fields from manufacturing and retail to healthcare and technology. Not only has the city been frequently acclaimed for its growing economy and business opportunities, but for its quality of life as well; in fact, in a recent survey taken among the city’s residents, 94% say they are satisfied with the quality of life in Overland Park. Nationally, Overland Park was included in the list of “50 Best Places to Live & Play” compiled by National Geographic Adventure in 2007, and was ranked as one of the “Top Ten Places to Raise a Family” by Southern Business & Development.
