The Outdoors, Chickens and Lifestyles of Oviedo, FL

Oviedo, FL—located 18 miles northwest of Orlando—is one of Central Florida’s esteemed communities, well-loved for its old Florida atmosphere. When relocating to Orlando and the Central Florida region, many people choose the city of Oviedo because its distinct charm and character is hard to find elsewhere. The most famous part of Oviedo, and one that is featured in many travel guides, is its downtown area full of free-roaming chickens that meander the streets. Oviedo’s chickens are a treasured icon for the city; “Chicken Crossing” signs help protect the birds from traffic, which readily comes to a standstill whenever the chickens cross the road, adding to the city’s insistence on a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere that distinguishes it from the surrounding Orlando suburbs. Downtown Oviedo features one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants, such as the Townhouse Restaurant, a local favorite, as well as several art and photography galleries, such as the Artistic Hand Art Gallery. Away from downtown, Oviedo boasts even more shopping and entertainment at the Oviedo Marketplace Mall.

In addition to its unique downtown atmosphere, another reason that people choose to buy a home in Oviedo is for its abundance of outdoor recreation. Boasting a warm, sunny year-round climate and plenty of parks, trails, and recreational facilities, Oviedo is the perfect playground for your favorite outdoor activity. For Oviedo golf lovers, the city offers one of the best courses of Central Florida—the Two Rivers Golf Club, a semi-private 18-hole course. Oviedo is home to a variety of family parks, as well as Lake Jessup, with Florida’s largest lake alligator population, and the Econ River Wilderness Area, which features three miles of trails that follow the Econlockhatchee River. Downtown Oviedo also has a connection to the Cross Seminole Trail, an 18 mile trail great for walking, jogging, and biking between several communities of Seminole County. From the fluttering butterflies of Lukas Nursery Butterfly Encounter to the great horned owl along Econ River, Oviedo is full of natural wonders and offers many fun and exciting activities for the whole family.
