Bala Cynwyd, settled in the 1680's by Welsh Quakers, is located in Lower Merion Township which is part of the Main Line and borders the western edge of Philadelphia. Now joined together, originally Bala and Cynwyd were two separate towns. Although joined together, they are served by separate rail stations on SEPTA's R6 Regional Rail line.
The major shopping area is called the Bala Cynwyd Shopping Center and borders Philadelphia on City Line Avenue. Also in this area is the home of the studios for WCAU-TV – (NBC 10). There is a rival studio across the street, WPVI-TV (6 ABC) but this studio is within the city limits of Philadelphia. There are several major broadcast AM and Fm stations located in Bala Cynwyd including WOGL-FM and 610 WIP AM.
Bala Cynwyd houses a large Jewish community and while there is a large network of synagogues, there are also churches representing many religions. Mostly single homes make up this delightful community and the Neighborhood Club which was established in 1906, continues to preserve the residential character of the town and to promote community spirit and civic pride. It has been noted that the First Boy Scout Troop in the United States is Troop 1 which is located in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania.
