Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania is located on the border of Montgomery and Delaware Counties along the Main Line of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It is home to the distinguished and influential Bryn Mawr College, as well as delightful shopping and dining and nearly 5,000 residents. The Welsh name of Bryn Mawr, meaning “big hill,” was given to this area of about 280 acres just west of Philiadelphia by William H. Wilson when he acquired the land on behalf of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Up until this point, this neighborhood was known as Humphreysville.
Bryn Mawr College, originated on the Quaker beliefs of Joseph W. Taylor, began in 1885 as a place for women to expand their minds beyond what other institutions would allow. Known as the first higher educational establishment to offer a graduate program for the Ph.D to women, this was only the beginning of what this college and the people associated with it would do for females around the world. From creating the first program for a graduate degree in social work, to defying McCarthyism in order to protect its students' rights, to its commitment to international scholarship, Bryn Mawr has been and will continue to be at the forefront of advocacy for education for women. It remains an all women's college to this day.
