Bethlehem, Pennsylvania traces its roots back to 1741 and has more existing 18th-century buildings than Williamsburg, VA. It is 27 percent residential and 28 percent open space. There is a rich assortment of housing from the 19th-century historic district to modern subdivisions to choose from. The Monocacy Creek, which flows through downtown Bethlehem, is so clean that it is the only trout propagating water in an urban area in the world.
For 10 days in the month of August, downtown Bethlehem is transformed into the country's largest outdoor music festival as Musikfest provides over 500 musical performances (most free of charge) on 13 stages.
The town's Yuletide observance includes a large lighted Star of Bethlehem, hundreds of lighted trees and other decorations, the Moravian Christmas Putz, a live Christmas Pageant, nightly bus tours to view the special lighting, and vigils, vespers and love feats in the Moravian church.
Tours of Bethlehem's historic district, including the Central Moravian Church (1803), Gemein Haus (1741), Old Chapel (1751), Moravian Cemetery and 18th-century industrial quarter, can be arranged by contacting Historic Bethlehem Partnership.
