Living in Chestnut Hill- Philadelphia, PA

Chestnut Hill is in the far northwestern corner of Philadelphia. The neighborhood’s small town feel charms visitors who walk along the main street, Germantown Avenue. This cobblestoned street is lined with all kinds of stores, providing necessities and boutiques all within walking distance for Chestnut Hill residents. The newest additions are a food store which opened in the fall of 2009 and a co-op which is scheduled to open in 2010. There are plenty of local restaurants serving all kinds of cuisine, from bar fare to sushi. Two annual festivals on Germantown Avenue draw retailers from outside of the city and many people: Fall for the Arts each autumn and the Garden Festival each spring. In December, shops on Germantown Avenue stay open late once a week for Stag and Doe night and many provide winter treats.

Chestnut Hill is a green neighborhood; trees line most streets and many residents have beautiful plantings in their gardens. In addition, Pastorius Park is a great place to take the dog, have a picnic, or enjoy a free summer concert. There are also spaces for the kids: a wonderful, community-built playground at the J.S. Jenks Elementary School and another playground as well as two baseball fields at the Water Tower Recreation Center. Chestnut Hill is well-connected to Fairmount Park with several entrances to Forbidden Drive and many trails providing excellent walking and hiking opportunities. All of the charm of Chestnut Hill is not far from the excitement of the city. There are two train lines, the R7 and the R8, that serve the community and provide direct transportation into the heart of Philadelphia.

The neighborhood offers a variety of housing options from 16’ wide row houses to architecturally significant mansions. From 2008 to the fall of 2009, 170 listed houses sold for between $150,000 and $3,200,000. In the summer of 2007, Forbes magazine rated Chestnut Hill as one of USA’s “Top Urban Enclaves.” Ninety percent of Chestnut Hill is within a National Register Historic District.

Eichler & Moffly proudly serves the wonderful communities throughout Philadelphia and Montgomery County. Eichler & Moffly’s home is in Chestnut Hill and its suburban office is located in Blue Bell, PA.
