Hockessin is located west of the City of Wilmington and borders parts of Avondale, Pennsylvania. This area of New Castle County, Delaware, is known for its mushroom & dairy farms but small businesses abound as more families make their homes in Hockessin. Specialty boutiques, bakeries, restaurants, book stores, produce stands and gardening nurseries thrive off the business from local customers as well as those travelers passing through to nearby destinations.
Two of the major roads making their way through Hockessin are Rt. 7/Limestone Rd. and Rt. 48/Lancaster Pike (which provides a direct commute into the City of Wilmington). In recent years both of these roads have been expanded to accommodate the traffic and development of the surrounding area. Much of the undeveloped land off these main roads has been converted into suburban developments and shopping centers, but there are webs of byways that wind their way around the hillsides that teem with small pockets of homes and farmland.
Despite the development, the aforementioned small businesses and organizations such as the Hockessin Soccer League and the Hockessin Moms' Club, as well as events such as the annual 4th of July Relays & Parade help to preserve Hockessin's small town appeal. Local parks host vast organized sporting activities, while the grounds of nearby Ashland Nature Center satisfy those looking for leisurely hikes. Other points of local interest include the ever-expanding Hockessin Library that offers many educational & social programs, and the Woodside Creamery which pleases patrons with its famous homemade fudge & ice-cream.
Homes in the Hockessin area consist mostly of single family homes with a decent amount of acreage, but there are a few neighborhoods that offer townhome living. There are a lot of established communities with varied home styles as well as new construction builder communities. And there are also home options that allow for living near amenities such as community, recreation & shopping centers, as well as properties that are tucked pleasantly away from main thoroughfares.
