The borough of Salisbury is part of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, just 96 miles southeast of Pittsburgh and 162 miles northwest of Washington D.C. A rich, historic community, Salisbury was founded by the Markley family, who traveled to the area from Wurtemberg, Germany in 1749. Before receiving its present name, the emerging town was briefly called Salsburrich and Elk-Lick, both of which refer to the abundance of salt deposits in the region. Salisbury is located within the beautiful Laurel Highlands area of Pennsylvania, which crosses the Laurel and Chestnut ridges of the Allegheny Mountains. With a small-town atmosphere and a tight-knit community of around 700 people, Salisbury offers good quality of life and a nurturing environment for growing families. The borough is served by the Salisbury-Elk Lick School District, with one elementary school (K-6) and one jr./sr. high school (7-12) that boasts an 11:1 student/teacher ratio.

Living within reach of two major urban centers—Pittsburgh and Washington D.C.—residents of Salisbury have unlimited opportunities for entertainment; but when they want something closer to home, there are an abundance of Salisbury and Somerset County attractions right outside their doorsteps. From shopping the annual Somerset Antique Show to riding Paul Bunyan’s Loggin’ Toboggan at the Idlewild Amusement Park, there are always fun things to do in the Laurel Highlands region. Somerset County has a vibrant arts community that supports vintage historic venues such as the elegant Arcadia Theater in Windber, the renovated Opera House in Rockwood, and the Mountain Playhouse in Jennerstown. Laurel Arts, Inc. in Somerset maintains the premier art gallery in the region, featuring many works by local artists. Salisbury artists and artisans also gather to sell their wares at the town’s annual festivals, such as The Springs Folk Festival and Salisbury Days.
