Selinsgrove, PA is the County Seat of Snyder County, PA and sits on the West Shore of the Susquehanna River approximately 50 miles north of the state capitol, Harrisburg. With a town population of just over 5,300, the prestigious liberal arts college Susquehanna University and its activities are the focal point of the community. The University is home during the school year to about 2000 students, and work to 125 faculty members. They participate in NCAA Division III Sports in the Liberty League. Degree programs in the School of Fine Arts in particular influence the community, providing quality arts performances not usually found in towns of this size.
Selinsgrove was founded in the late 1700s by an Army Captain who fought with Washington in the Revolutionary War, and is filled with historic homes whose architecture is Colonial and Early American. The commercial area has also been beautifully preserved and maintains its charming historic look.
Selinsgrove is 5 miles from the Susquehanna Valley Mall, 12 miles from Bucknell University, 33 miles from Bloomsburg State University and 90 miles from Pocono Mountain Skiing.
The area to the west of town is strictly rural, and Penns Creek – best known to fly fishermen nationwide – winds through to meet the Susquehanna. Several bird sanctuaries dot the area, and flat bottom boat sports are popular. There is a PA State Fish and Boat Commission Access nearby.
The area housing market is strong, influenced by the University, County Government, and larger area employers such as Wood-Mode Cabinets, Weis Markets, Knight Celotex and modular housing manufacturers Ritz Craft and PennLyon, Inc.
