About Pittsford, New York
From 1825 to the early 1900’s the Erie Canal began serving as a vehicle for commerce, transporting livestock and goods from Buffalo to Albany.
Merchants, millers and boat builders in colonial Pittsford depended upon the canal for their livelihoods.
Today, the historic waterway caters to the leisure trade. Boaters and fishermen flock to the waterfront for fun and pleasure, while bikers and strollers journey on the towpath where mules once traveled. For Pittsford area residents, the Erie Canal is a perfect recreational venue.
In the early 1990’s, the village of Pittsford launched a three part canal improvement project aimed at transforming the waterfront into a regional tourism destination.
The renovated Port of Pittsford waterfront park includes a pedestrian plaza, promenade, overlook pavilion, docking and fueling facilities. Aesthetic elements were carefully designed to preserve the area’s distinctive historic character and Pittsford’s waterfront is now one of the most frequently photographed and heavily used sections of the entire canal system.
