Welcome to Richmond, VirginiaIf you’re very attentive, as you amble along the Canal Walk in Shockhoe Bottom you may notice a small pyramid of stone topped by a copper cross. This monument represents an older cross, originally planted by Christopher Newport in 1607 to claim what was to become the City of Richmond, Virginia.
Of course, Newport was not the first to climb the seven hills of Richmond. There was a busy Powhatan Indian village here long before European settlers named it for the English town nestled upon the Thames. Richmond also witnessed the revolutionary speech of Patrick Henry in St. John’s Church on the aptly named Church Hill. In 1780, Richmond was made the capital of Virginia and in 1861 it was made capital of the Confederacy. As an industrial city, Richmond was a prize in the Confederate crown until her capture in 1865. 150 years later we are still at peace. The gruesome, Civil War prison on Belle Isle is now a beautiful respite in a bustling city. After the city was burned something new was built on the banks of the James River. Richmond today is comprised of shady, tree-lined neighborhoods and monument-lined avenues. Historic churches stand right beside modern skyscrapers and residents and visitors alike enjoy the juxtaposition.
With a comparatively stable economy, wonderful parks and recreational facilities and award-winning universities, Richmond is a destination for many people and families. Whether you enjoy city life or prefer quieter, country living, both can be enjoyed in Richmond and its surrounding counties. With the development of the Virginia High Speed Rail, Richmond could also become an easy commute away from Northern Virginia or Washington DC.
