City Of Roswell Georgia

Roswell's beginnings can be traced back to one man: Roswell King. After passing through the town and witnessing firsthand the potential Vickery Creek had, he invited friends to join him and a community was formed. Shortly thereafter, his son Barrington King founded a mill that would become an integral part of this Atlanta suburb.

Barrington King founded the Roswell Manufacturing Company, and by 1839, the company was in full swing producing cotton products. The city was built around this mill, and by 1854, the town of Roswell was officially founded. Unfortunately, the idyllic town wouldn't remain peaceful and prosperous for much longer. Many of its original mills were destroyed during the Civil War.

Although soldiers were ordered to protect Roswell's private property, many buildings were ruined as a result of the Civil War. However, this warfare was not enough to hamper the town and prevent it from growing. After the war came to a close, families returned to Roswell, mills and homes were rebuilt, and the textile industry continued to be a major part of Roswell's economy for an additional hundred years.

Today, the city of Roswell, Georgia is a 38-square-mile suburb of Atlanta with over 80,000 residents and 122 acres of land on the National Register of Historic Places. As you can imagine, the city's past is a large part of life in Roswell today. Many antebellum mansions are open to the public, and walking tours take visitors to some of the most historic and important parts of not only the town, but of the United States.
