About Cainhoy, SC

The Cainhoy/Wando peninsula is located just north of Daniel Island in Berkeley County only minutes from historic downtown Charleston, SC. The area has a slightly rural feel yet is accessible within minutes to all major urban neighborhoods via I-526.

The name Cainhoy is most probably of Native American origin. The area, first settled by Scots and French Huguenots, served as a link between inland Berkeley County and the more progressive Charleston Community. In its earliest days, Cainhoy was noted for the production of rice and lumber as well as the manufacture of bricks used in the construction of fine homes throughout the lower Charleston peninsula.

Of particular historical note, there is a collection of nine preserved historic buildings, dating from the mid 1700s to the early 1900s, which illustrate the community’s development from a small village to a small, but popular river port used by Berkeley County planters. In 1876, during Reconstruction, a political rally turned into a serious and deadly riot. Dubbed the “Cainhoy Massacre,” between free blacks and whites, the skirmish left seven dead and more than twice that many wounded.

Today, there are several new residential communities ranging in price from $240,000 to $450,000, numerous fine stables and a mixture of industries and industrial parks. Some of the more popular communities are Beresford Hall, Nelliefield Plantation, River Reach Pointe and Palmetto Place.
