Charleston is not only an intriguing place to visit, it is also a fabulous place to live. For those wishing to relocate to Charleston, SC, the city’s real estate market offers a variety of homes, from luxurious waterfront estates and historic plantation-style homes, to more urban condominiums and town homes. Charleston is divided up into six areas: the Peninsula/Downtown, West Ashley, Johns Island, James Island, Daniel Island, and the Cainhoy Peninsula. Each area contains an array of neighborhoods and subdivisions, making it that much easier to find a community that’s a perfect fit for you and your lifestyle.
Charleston’s downtown is home to some of the city’s most historically beautiful and distinguished communities. For example, the French Quarter is at the heart of the downtown area and is well-known for its French-influenced architecture. The district referred to as South of Broad is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in town, and includes The Battery (the waterfront homes in and around Battery Park), as well as the famous Rainbow Row, which is located on the Cooper side of the peninsula. Homes in downtown Charleston typically range from $350,000 to $7,000,000.
To highlight just a few of Charleston’s premier neighborhoods outside of the downtown area, there are a number of communities located in the city’s West Ashley area that have become increasingly popular because of their close proximity to the city center and also because they offer a wide selection of homes at affordable prices. The Grand Oaks Plantation is a newer development of traditional style homes that appeal to new homebuyers and growing families alike. Homes in the Grand Oaks Plantation are typically spacious with open floor plans, and range in price from $150,000 to $285,000. If condominiums or town homes in Charleston are what you are looking for, West Ashley’s Radcliffe Place offers cute, traditional style condos and townhomes that are priced at the low $200,000s. Charleston’s John’s Island area offers two great communities that have shown tremendous growth in recent years--Headquarter’s Island and the Villages in St. John’s Woods. These areas offer remote country-living, and yet they are not too far from the city center. Single family homes and condominiums on John’s Island typically range in price from the low-$300,000s to the low-$500,000s.
These communities are just a few of the more than 50 neighborhoods you have to choose from when looking for a home in Charleston. With such a rich history, beautiful architecture, and that alluring southern atmosphere, it is easy to see why over 600,000 people call Charleston, SC their home.
