About Hanahan, South Carolina

Hanahan, a small city of approximately 14,000 people is located in Berkeley County, South Carolina, about thirty minutes from Historic Charleston, SC. Hanahan was incorporated in 1972 and is located between North Charleston and the old Naval Weapons Station, which was formerly a submarine base and is still owned by the federal government. The city got its name from J. Ross Hanahan who was the first chairman of the Charleston Water Commission from 1917 - 1923.

Hanahan is located within a 10 - 15 minute drive of the major shopping areas of North Charleston, specifically Northwoods Mall and the newly developed Center Pointe and Tanger Outlet Stores which number close to 100. Also within a short drive are Interstate 26 and Interstate 526, as well as U.S. Highway 52. Hanahan is close to area beaches and lakes and is located less than 10 minutes from the Charleston International Airport. The public schools in Hanahan are considered to be some of the best in the Metro Charleston area.

Probably the most historic aspect of the City of Hanahan is the Yeamans Hall Plantation. The plantation was originally owned by Sir John Yeamans who built a home there in 1674. The nearly 1000 acre property is home to the Yeamans Hall Club, magnificent private equity golf and country club that was first opened in 1925. The course was designed by the famous architect Seth Raynor and the Clubhouse bears the imprint of architect James Gamble Rogers. The par 71 course measures 6541 yards and features some of the grandest moss covered oak trees, gently rolling contours and beautiful southern charm.
