Welcome to Mt. Pleasant, SC

Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina is a city of approximately 60,000 people located across the Cooper River from historic Charleston, SC. Mt. Pleasant is the 3rd largest city in Charleston County and the 5th largest city in the state. Primary access to the city is made via the Arthur Ravenel Bridge, an 8 lane cable-stayed bridge built in 2005. One of the longest bridges of its kind in the country, the Ravenel Bridge offers breathtaking views of the Cooper River and surrounding tidal marshes.

Initially occupied by the Sewee Indians, Mt. Pleasant was founded in 1680 by English settlers led by Captain Florentia O’Sullivan. During the Civil War, fortifications based in Mt. Pleasant were used to fire upon Ft. Sumter in Charleston harbor. Mt. Pleasant was also the secret training ground for the nine member crew of the H.L. Hunley, the confederate submarine credited with the sinking of the USS Huosatonic, a 205 foot sloop-of-war used to blockade Charleston Harbor. The Hunley, which sank after completing its mission, was raised in 2001 and is currently on display at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center in North Charleston, SC.

For many years, Mt. Pleasant was populated seasonally by wealthy Charleston residents who could afford summer homes across the river. The area still known today as the “Old Village” is resplendent with homes dating back to the 1800s. Boone Hall Plantation (c1681) is famous for its “Avenue of Oaks” and has been the scene of many made for TV movies. Today, Mt. Pleasant is home to Patriots Point, a naval and maritime museum featuring the WWII aircraft carrier, Yorktown as well as the Congressional Medal of Honor Museum. Towne Center, an upscale shopping experience with over 65 national and local tenants is just a few miles up Highway 17 North. I’On Village on the Cooper River is an exquisite model of a traditional neighborhood on 243 acres with 762 home sites, encompassing 6 small boroughs.

Often referred to as the “pleasant side of the river,” Mt. Pleasant was named in 2006 by Money Magazine as one of the top 100 places to live in the US. Homes in Mt. Pleasant average in the mid $400s.
