Welcome to North Charleston, SC

With a population of 80,000, North Charleston is the 3rd largest city in South Carolina. Incorporated in 1972, North Charleston has grown from a predominately industrial/military community to a progressive city alive with a performing arts center, a 14,000 seat coliseum featuring top named talent and sporting events, museums, excellent shopping and a revitalization plan that rivals any in America.

From the 1600’s until the Civil War, the area north of the historic City of Charleston was comprised primarily of large plantations. After the War, phosphate fertilizer plants and strip mining predominated until the early 20th century when the United States Navy Yard was established. In 1912 a group of Charleston businessmen formed a development company and began to lay out an industrial city. Park Circle, an area reserved for industrial, commercial and residential usage was planned as one of only two garden city models in the US and most of the original planning concept remains today.

The Naval Base and Shipyard was closed in 1996 and as a tribute to the thousands of men and women who served their country and the civilians who labored for 95 years, the Greater Charleston Naval Base Memorial was established. The Hunley Museum, which honors the memory of the world’s first submarine to sink a vessel in 1864, is located at the former Charleston Naval Base complex. You can also tour the American LaFrance Fire Museum featuring a collection of 18 antique fire fighting vehicles. Tanger Outlet, opened in 2007, features over 90 brand name manufacturers and designer outlet stores. The North Charleston Coliseum and Performing Arts Center is a multi-purpose arena for sporting events, concerts meetings and the home of the ECHL SC Stingrays hockey team.

In a public-private partnership formed in 2001, the City of North Charleston and the Noisette Company announced the formation of the Noisette Project. The project’s primary goal is to revitalize a 3000 acre area where the City first began including 340 acres on the Old Charleston Naval Base.

The average sales price of a home in the North Charleston, Goose Creek, Hanahan area averages around $170,000 making the area extremely desirable and affordable. A recent announcement by Newsweek Magazine has ranked the Academic Magnet High School, located in North Charleston, as the seventh-best public high school in the country. The North Charleston school improved its ranking on the magazine’s list from the past two years when it was named the 11th and 10th best public high school.
