Welcome to Sanborn, NY
The hamlet of Sanborn is located in the towns of Cambria, Lewiston, and Wheatfield, in upstate New York, approximately 10 miles northeast of Niagara Falls and 80 miles west of Rochester, NY. Now part of Niagara County, the region of Sanborn holds an honored placed in U.S. history, well-known for its role in the commercial development of the Great Lakes and involvement in both the War of 1812 and French and Indian War, and also for the courage and determination of its many residents who participated in the Underground Railroad. Cambria and Lewiston were both established in the first decade of the 19th century; prior to their surveyance and development, western New York was a vast wilderness inhabited by the Neuter and Seneca Indians. First settled in 1811, Sanborn developed alongside the prosperous hamlet of Pekin, and was originally referred to as “South Pekin.” The first railroad came to the hamlet in 1852 via the Niagara, Lockport, and Rochester lines. In 1866, the name of South Pekin was changed to “Sanborn,” after the hamlet’s postmaster at the time—Lee R. Sanborn.
