About Schenectady, NY

Schenectady, NY, nestled along the Mohawk River, is one of four major cities (along with Albany, Troy, and Saratoga Springs) that make up the region known as New York’s Captial District.

Nearly 350 years old, Schenectady is a city with a vibrant past. It grew up in the 1800’s around two major companies, General Electric and American Locomotive, earning it the knickname “The City that Lights and Hauls the World”. Today the city of nearly 62,000 is still serviced by Amtrak and home to GE’s only major research and development facility.

Schenectady is home to Union College, the oldest planned university campus in the country, and a widely respected educational institution. It boasts New York’s first National Register historic neighborhood – The Stockade District – and offers one of the areas premiere birthing centers in its Bellevue Women’s Hospital.

Culture also abounds. Whether you take in live shows at Historic Proctors Theatre or the locally talented Schenectady Light Opera, visit the Aerosciences Museum, the Planetarium or just enjoy some music in the park by the Erie Canal, Schenectady – the 9th largest city in NY State – has a neighborhood that could be right for you.

And in the Schenectady area, our moderate four-season climate means your exploring possibilities are endless. Visit the nearby Adirondacks with their hiking trails and lakes, walk up the historic million dollar staircase of the NYS Capitol, pick your own apples at one of many local orchards, take a boat ride on the Mohawk, or shop Rotterdam Mall. Travel is made easy with Albany International Airport & Amtrak nearby.

Schenectady is a city where you can learn, work and play.
