Welcome to Silver Lake, OR
The town of Silver Lake is located in Oregon’s Outback, approximately 260 miles southeast of Portland. In a region full of natural wonders and geological oddities, Silver Lake residents enjoy closeness with nature that is hard to find in other parts of the U.S. The Outback is well-loved by outdoor enthusiasts for its diverse terrain that shifts from vast plains and sand dunes to mountain forests, crystal clear lakes, and hot springs. North Lake County and Silver Lake recreation is just as diverse, ranging from fishing and hunting to ATV and horseback riding. Two Lake County activities that draw visitors from all over the world are hang gliding and sunstone mining. The county seat of Lakeview is considered the “Hang-Gliding Capitol of the West”; the town hosts yearly competitions and on the 4th of July, over 300 hang-gliders simultaneously launch from Black Cap Mountain. Sunstone mining also brings worldly travelers to Lake County because it is one of only seven known origins of the gemstone, and is the only location that produces sunstones with copper inclusions, giving certain stones a color shifting appearance.
