Silver Spring Maryland BusinessesSilver Spring is one of the most important and fastest growing business and residential centers in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. While not an incorporated Maryland city, its area population of more than 200,000 makes it second to Baltimore in size. By the 1950s, Silver Spring was the second busiest retail market between Baltimore and Richmond. The area is currently experiencing a renaissance of new development and historic preservation. Major projects are bringing new retailers, restaurants, entertainment options, office space, lodging, and residential development.
A key element of the new Downtown Silver Spring will be the Civic Building. The 48,000 square-foot building will include a Great Hall, the offices of the Silver Spring Regional Center and the Round House Theatre School. Veterans Plaza will grace the front of the building with the memorial to Silver Spring veterans. Upon completion the Plaza will provide a pavilion for outdoor events and activities to include a winter ice rink.
Another renaissance component is the new world headquarters of Discovery Communications, Inc. which opened its doors to the first 1,500 employees in 2003. Discovery Communications, the parent company of numerous cable channels including Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and Discovery Health, is broadcast in more than 150 countries and is the most watched TV brand in the world.
