About Sleepy Hollow, Il

Visiting Sleepy Hollow feels as though you have virtually traveled back in time – and its residents wouldn't have it any other way. Located 40 miles northwest of Chicago's Loop, Sleepy Hollow embraces the rustic feeling of yester year. It is not uncommon to see citizens riding horses through the streets, even among the more commercialized parts of the six square miles that comprise the village. Sleepy Hollow is strictly a residential community – meaning all but a few municipal workers in the local government are commuters. Dundee, a nearby commercialized community, offers any additional needs of Sleepy Hollow residents.

There are a handful of subdivisions built since the 1950's with property prices ranging from $185,000 (for older homes) up to $600,000 (more recently built, larger homes). One draw for the older houses is the well-developed landscaping that generally accompanies the homes. Sleepy Hollow, each Halloween, embraces its shared name of Washington Irving's “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. A resident of the town dresses up as the headless horseman and can be seen galloping through the village streets.
