About Staten Island, NY
Did you know that Staten Island was won by New York State in a boat race around the Island in an effort to resolve a land dispute with the State of New Jersey? Since then, Staten Island is the third largest in land area of the five boroughs of New York City, although it is the least populated (with current numbers putting the population at 464,573 people). It is seven miles wide and seventeen miles long. The southern most county in New York State, Staten Island is a free, short ferry ride to Manhattan. Staten Islanders can enjoy the many attractions Manhattan has to offer including Broadway shows, cultural centers, museums, the best of restaurants and much more. Commuters travel easily from Staten Island to Brooklyn and New Jersey over any of four bridges that connect to Staten Island.
Over 5000 acres are set aside for parks and recreation (including Blue Heron Park which is 220 acres). Staten Island also has three public golf courses and the only private golf course/country club within New York City. There are several museums including The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art (which boasts the largest collection of Tibetan Art in the United States), Historic Richmondtown, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Staten Island Yankee Stadium as well as our own Staten Island Zoo, just to name a few.
