The Swarthmore Community

Swarthmore is a tree-lined residential community of distinctive homes and quiet neighborhoods, anchored by the campus of Swarthmore College. At the center of the Borough is a downtown core of unique, independent shops and services.

Community and volunteer minded, Swarthmore is a great place to live, work and visit!

Our community is small and diverse, full of many things to do and experience. Here are a few small ideas of ways to spend your day:

  • Visit Downtown Swarthmore and take a look at our unique shops and service businesses. Many stores to meet your needs, and among them, you’ll find a great toy shop, rug shop, a garden art store and more. Different types of foods and services too. Check out the “Swarthmore Business and Community Organizations” Directory for more information.
  • Stroll along our beautiful streets. Swarthmore has been named a "Tree City USA ” for the past 21 years and is full of mature trees which line our streets- every season of the year it is a pleasant way to pass the day.
  • Stop by Little Crum Creek Park and view our newly restored wetland. You’ll see many native plant species and see nature at work!
  • Visit the Scott Arboretum located on the grounds of Swarthmore College.
  • Knock on the door to the Fire House and take a look at our newest truck, Tower 14, or one of our restored antique fire engines!
  • View an art exhibit in Borough Hall. Swarthmore Friends of the Arts updates the exhibits every other month- stop by and see what is new!
  • Also in Borough Hall, on the upper level are two walls full of historical Swarthmore photos.
