Island Living at its Best – Galveston, TX

Located 50 miles south of Houston on the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston Island is a treasure with 33 miles of beaches, relaxed lifestyle, educational opportunities, a variety of leisure activities, excellent medical facilities, first-rate restaurants, a vibrant, historical downtown, a thriving art community. Galveston has the amenities of a larger city, but with the tight-knit small town friendliness – the best of both worlds! Citizens have worked together for a stronger city since its founding in 1836.

The Island offers a variety of choices for living – Victorian to Beachfront. Galveston’s historic neighborhoods offer unique opportunities, from stately mansions to quaint cottages to lofts in downtown buildings. Galveston has one of the country’s most important concentrations of late 19th and early 20th century architecture.

Modern homes and high-rise condos on bayous, bays and the Gulf of Mexico provide another lifestyle. Although many are second homes, the number of permanent residents living in resort-type homes is growing. The Island also offers more traditional housing in neighborhoods throughout much of the Island.

The economic base is multifaceted – expanding job markets in tourism, the medical field, marine industry, education, banking, insurance are among some of the choices. The University of Texas Medical Branch is the largest employer along with other educational institutions – Texas A & M University at Galveston and Galveston Community College. The Galveston Independent School District provides an excellent education for the children; also there are a number of excellent private schools.

Galveston is rich with culture. There is a thriving art community, galleries and Art Walks. The local Symphony is excellent, performing at The Grand 1894 Opera House. This beautifully restored historic opera house offers a first class performing arts season. The Beach Band offers summer outdoor concerts, attracting young and old.

The Galveston Historical Foundation plays a major role in Galveston, working to preserve the history. GHF was instrumental in developing The Strand District. This area is full of shops, galleries and restaurants housed in 19th century buildings. Close by is the cruise ship terminal bringing hundreds of visitors to the Island weekly. In addition to the cruise ship business, Galveston has a working port.

Galveston has an appeal that is undeniable and hard to leave once experienced. Few cities offer relaxed living with an appealing package of amenities such as natural beauty, rich history, cultural events and outstanding architecture.
