Living in Possum Kingdom Lake, TX
Formed with the construction of Morris Sheppard Dam by the Works Progress Program in 1941, spectacular Possum Kingdom Lake stretches 65 miles and covers 17,700 acres with 310 miles of shoreline. Its limestone floor ensures sparkling clear water that’s a favorite for scuba divers and PK, as it’s called locally, is known for fishing, canoeing, kayaking and other water sports, camping and hiking. It’s also home to PK State Park, YMCA Camp Grady Spruce and Camp Constantin Boy Scouts of America. Steeped in history and folklore, the North Texas Hill Country region is the birthplace of Texas cattlemen and some areas of the lake were originally part of the Loving Goodnight ranch of Lonesome Dove fame. The story of famous Hell’s Gate is only a small portion of the folklore.
Predominantly a resort and second home area, homeowners have a wide choice of locations, price ranges, and community amenities. The West side of the lake is especially convenient for those coming from Midland, Lubbock, Amarillo and Wichita Falls, while the East side of the lake attracts families from the D/FW metroplex, only 90 miles away. Families can choose from cozy cabins on the water, upscale gated communities, a resort with championship golf and spa, and many others.
