Living in San Antonio, TX

The Alamo, Davy Crocket, the River Walk, the Spurs and Mexican food are all things you think of when you hear San Antonio. But did you know that San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the country with a population nearing 1.3 million? It is no longer a sleepy little south Texas town but a vibrant diverse community attracting businesses like USAA Insurance Company, HEB Grocery, Kinetic Concepts, Medtronic, Valero Energy, Tesoro Energy and Clear Channel Communications.

Just a few of the reasons these companies have chosen San Antonio include our relatively mild “sun belt” climate, our central location and an attractive affordable lifestyle. Our home prices are some of the lowest in the nation running about 25% below the national median. San Antonio offers “Whatever you like”… you can live on a “mini ranch” just outside the city, in a gated community with a small lot, on acreage within the city, or in a condominium on the River Walk. And, unlike our sister cities, we sit on the edge of the fabulous Hill Country. Take a short drive North and you can see rolling hills, roaring rivers, clear lakes and stately live oak trees. Boerne and Fredericksburg are just two of the more popular destinations where the lifestyle becomes slower and the atmosphere is reminiscent of an old western town.

The downtown area perfectly demonstrates the city’s commitment to preserving the old and incorporating the new. Not only are historic neighborhoods such as the King William district near the heart of downtown, the city’s most popular landmarks naturally offer a taste of the old and the new. The Alamo and its grounds rank as the most popular tourist destination in Texas.

There are a variety of properties available downtown to buy or rent. Apartment rental rates range from $475 for a one-bedroom to more than $3,000 for a three-bedroom. In recent years, developers’ interest in renovating historic buildings into living quarters has surged. Among those projects are the Majestic and Brady buildings, Robert E. Lee Building, Calcasieu Building, Maverick Building and the Cadillac Lofts. There are a total of 650 condominium units including Camp Street Lofts, King William Town Homes, La Cascada, Travis Lofts and many others. A number of additional residential projects are in the planning and feasibility stages and will soon be under construction. Those living downtown include retired persons, executives, office workers, students, artists, professionals, active duty military, employees of hotels and other downtown businesses, as well as those living on fixed and/or limited incomes, representing a diverse group of residents.

San Antonio has a wide variety of homes available ranging from a low of $70,000 to more than $5,000,000. These neighborhoods include traditional neighborhoods, planned communities, garden homes, and condominiums. Lot sizes vary from a traditional size of 75 x 120 to an executive level lot being 120 x 150. Most homes are constructed of native stone, brick, frame, stucco or a combination.

Our vibrant history and planned growth make San Antonio a great place to live and work.
