Welcome to Sugar Land, TXThe city of Sugar Land is located in Fort Bend County, Texas, just 20 miles southwest of downtown Houston. With humble beginnings as a sugar plantation established in the mid-1800’s, Sugar Land has become one of the fastest growing cities in Texas, and has received high praise as one of the best places to live in the U.S. Recently, the city was ranked fifth on a list of “Safest Cities in the United States” by CQ Press and Forbes.com selected it as one of Houston’s “Top Suburbs to Live Well.” Also, Sugar Land has frequently appeared on Money magazine’s list of “Best Cities to Live in the United States,” ranking third in 2006 and sixty fourth in 2008. Two of the city’s greatest qualities are its diversity in business and industry, with local corporate offices of Imperial Sugar, Western Airways, Minute Maid, Aetna US Healthcare and a variety of energy, technology and engineering firms, as well as its quality education through the Fort Bend Independent School District. Sugar Land is also home to several private schools, and the city’s graduates and adults have easy access to the Wharton County Junior College, the University of Houston System at Sugar Land, and more than 55 colleges and universities within Houston itself.
