This sleepy community of just under 3,000 citizens sits on the Wilmington River bluff and dates back to 1856 when it was primarily a fishing processing community. Honey Park located off Mechanics Avenue is a beautiful park with a pavilion for family picnics and a dock for easy access to the Wilmington River. Nellie Johnson Park has a basketball court and playground equipment for children. A hot spot for dining by all Savannahians is Tubby’s Tank House on River Drive. Here you get great seafood and a wonderful river view. And the best part is you can walk to any of the facilities from anywhere in Thunderbolt!
Since 1891 Thunderbolt has been home to Savannah State University which has an enrollment of about 3,200 students. The University brings not only jobs to the community, but it also brings life, diversity and vitality of its students, which are positives for any community. Thunderbolt even boasts of its own museum where its heritage is honored and maintained. Thunderbolt participates in “National Night Out,” an event celebrated throughout communities across America. It’s a night of music, food and fellowship with family and neighbors. Starting in May 2009, Thunderbolt will also have its very first spring festival, another opportunity for residents to enjoy their community together.
