Welcome to Thunderbolt, GAIf you desire the “small town” charm of yesterday, but still be minutes from the excitement of downtown Savannah, then you should consider Thunderbolt, Georgia your home! This sleepy community of just under 3,000 citizens sits on the Wilmington River bluff and dates back to 1856 when it was primarily a fishing processing community. Today it is a much-desired area for homebuyers because it is centrally located between Savannah and Tybee Island; has water access for boating and fishing; a marina; and affordable homes. You are a hop, skip, and jump from dining and shopping along Victory Drive and you also have easy access to the Truman Parkway which connects you to downtown or Savannah’s south side!
The homes in this area range from quaint cottages of the 1930’s and 1940’s to new construction and most of the lots are generous size with mature landscaping. You can still find homes under $200,000 in Thunderbolt, which makes it very desirable for young couples starting out. Many of the homes have “good sitting” porches...a perfect spot to visit with your neighbor. And it’s a walking community. It’s an easy stroll to the river front to enjoy the magnificent views of the intercoastal waterway.
Don’t be fooled by the sleepy, small town feel. There is plenty for the entire family to do in Thunderbolt! If you love fishing then Thunderbolt is the place for you. W.E. Honey Park located off Mechanics Avenue is a beautiful park with a pavilion for family picnics and a dock for easy access to the Wilmington River. Nellie Johnson Park has a basketball court and playground equipment for children. A hot spot for dining by all Savannahians is Tubby’s Tank House on River Drive. Here you get great seafood and a wonderful river view. And the best part is you can walk to any of the facilities from anywhere in Thunderbolt!
Since 1891 Thunderbolt has been home to Savannah State University which has an enrollment of about 3,200 students. The University brings not only jobs to the community, but it also brings life, diversity and vitality of its students, which are positives for any community. Thunderbolt even boasts of its own museum where its heritage is honored and maintained. Thunderbolt participates in “National Night Out,” an event celebrated throughout communities across America. It’s a night of music, food and fellowship with family and neighbors. Starting in May 2009, Thunderbolt will also have its very first spring festival, another opportunity for residents to enjoy their community together.
